Roatan Beach and Mangos

DAY 2 🇭🇳 (4 minute read – be sure to follow the series)

See below for links to other days

Today, is a lazy pool day. Especially after the Rum Punch, Oi vey 🤦‍♀️. A few things to note about Palmetto Bay. First, bring insect repellent made for sand fleas. We brought some Deet, however it is not reef friendly and I care about our marine life, so I did not use much of it (plus they say it is not good for your skin either). They sell some local, all-natural spray if you forgot, and it works well! It has a very pleasant scent as well!

The office here at Palmetto Bay can sell it, or there is a bunch across the way at the Local Roatan Brewery (we visit that later in the week). Although sitting at the pool you do not experience the sand fleas as bad as on the beach, you still get a few bites. Bug spray and sunscreen are your BEST FRIENDS!

The sand fleas on the beach are HORRIFIC!! After my Rum Punch yesterday I decided to take a swim in the ocean. As I exited the ocean, I stumbled a bit in the sea grass and decided to lay in the sand for a moment. BAD IDEA!!!! Later my entire back looked as if I contracted smallpox. After a shower and a white vinegar coating, the angry bumps receded, however I still looked like I had the remnants of smallpox. At least they did not itch, I believe the vinegar coating helped significantly (I’m sure the Rum Punch assisted with not feeling much either)! Apparently after living here for some time the sand fleas do not bother the locals as much. They had no problems walking on the beach and relaxing a bit. I’m not sure what makes them “immune”, but regardless, I did notice the beach was not overly busy. It was few and far between when we saw someone brave the beach.

The mosquitos are out in the morning and the evening, so be weary of those as well. The wind on this side of the island is significant, however it is welcoming with the 80+ degree heat with the 80+ percent humidity. Yes, significant. As in 15-20mph winds at least, most of the afternoon(s).  Also, good to know, The Cove restaurant is closed on Mondays (so is the Brewery)!  So, if you don’t have means of transportation or you’re budgeting, make sure you hit the grocery store and stock up!

While you are there be sure to pick up some dog biscuits for the “stray” dogs. I would not actually call them strays. They are very friendly, well trained, and well taken care of by the locals! They are very happy to see you and will follow you around and keep you company! I absolutely adored the time they lay on the porch with us in the evenings and they guided us down the pathways.  They even sat and waited for the taxis with us.  If you fall in love, they are up for adoption!

MANGO DOWN!!! BEWARE the falling mangos and coconuts. When they fall on the roof in the middle of the night it scares the beegeezes outta ya the first time!! 🤣 It sure is green and beautiful here though! Worth the fright!

We ended our lazy day with dinner at The Cove again then we headed back and reached out to the Grand Roatan Resort over in West Bay for some pampering tomorrow! Hopefully we hear back and can schedule some relaxation!!
